![]() NUMBER THIRTY:
THE REN & STIMPY SHOW (1991-1996)Due to Youtube regulations, we can only show a 5 second clip of each show before those PINHEADS shut us down. Thankfully, our video team has picked some of the most meaningful 5 second moments in each show's history. Mark Riddles (ranked it): It's appropriate for Ren and Stimpy and Rocko Modern Life to be back to back as they are both shows that both injected adult (and by adult I don't always mean sex jokes) humor into their cartoon. Rocko was extremely subtle about such things while Ren and Stimpy was absolutely blatant about it. I remember seeing reports on the news about how Ren and Stimpy was bad for kids. There was a disheveled woman who says her kids won't stop talking about farts since watching an episode. As if kids only know of the concept of farting from a cartoon. Jixby Phillips (ranked it 46): Ren and Stimpy wins JOKE OF THE YEAR 1993 or whatever year this happened in: Ren and Stimpy are in charge of guarding the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln’s head gets smashed because of some stupid reason, I forget what. Stimpy must glue the smashed pieces back together. But he’s an idiot, so he does it wrong every time. In one instance Stimpy glues the pieces so it resembles Santa Claus. “wrong president!” Ren shouts. I have a very specific way of looking at the reality of the Ren and Stimpy Show. I’m not sure if this is an intentional thing John K was going for, but here it goes, and hopefully I can explain it good enough. You know how Looney Tunes exists on TV? Like they take old, classic Looney Tunes cartoons and then they add interstitial moments between the old cartoons using new animations of Bugs Bunny or whoever sort of “hosting” the show? I like to think that that’s true for this show, that these are somehow “classic” Ren and Stimpy cartoons that have existed for years already, and the episodes simply plug them in and animated new sequences where Ren and Stimpy address the audience. I actually have a complete collection of Ren & Stimpy comics. I’ve revisited them a bit, and I kinda noticed something: they aren’t very good. But they did come in handy once: I used an issue to trace Ren and Stimpy into my own fan-made drawing that would possibly air on Nicktoons Thanksgiving Day weekend. Nickelodian had these long-ass marathons of Nicktoons and between shows and commercials they simply aired a slideshow of fan-art sent in from kids. Then they’d drop in the voices of different Nicktoon stars saying generic things like “wow, looks great!” I spent the entire weekend taping it in case I was on TV. Unfortunately it was not meant to be. They opted not to use my drawing. Why? Probably because it was too rude. It was called “Stimpy pisses the house” and in it Stimpy pees himself to the point where he fills the entire house with piss. Ren is wading in it, looking angry while Stimpy looks pleased. Oh well, I eventually got my due, in the comic book of all places. Check it: they printed my disgusting letter!. NOTE: Remember when TNN tried to make it’s own Adult Swim, and it included a revival of Ben and Stimpy? And it kinda stunk? Yeah. I just wanted to bring up to be a dick. London Arbuckle (ranked it 21) This show is pretty important to anyone who grew up in the early 90's and had cable. It was the rudest & weirdest show around but it wasn't too rude like abeavis or a butt-head, it was just rude enough. And it was so startingly bizarre, I imagine it helped shape alot of people's sensibilities. Sometimes it's kinda dull, and the guy who created it is basically an awful delusional douche, but I usually have a good time watching it still. Not as good as rocko if u ask me, but it gets points for nostalgia. Lots of people talk about how the show stunk after John K. got fired, but ever notice how much DARKER it got after he left? Every other episode involved death in some creepy way, like that cowboy storyteller croaking and r&s bury him, or the one where they live with an old lady and the butler murders her, and her & ren & stimpy all get stuffed. A lot of the episodes had creepy religious themes too, I seem to remember. A lot of those episodes honestly disturbed me when I was a kid. Is this your idea of making an "edgy" cartoon, mercenaries who nickelodeon hired? sheesh! The John K. episodes were just gross more than anything. COMMENTS FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY

IMDB TRIVIA (found by Mr. Adventure!)Ren & Stimpy was conceived after John Kricfalusi shook hands with a cat and a dog at a television studio Halloween party. It was later revealed to John that the cat and dog were none other than Laverne & Shirley, his guardian angels. WHERE TO WATCH THE REN & STIMPY SHOWI'm sure it's on some cable channel. But also, the whole series is more-or-less on DVD. You'll disagree with that statement if you're a nit-picker. Yeah, there's some stuff missing. John K got a little sloppy putting these together. They originally were gonna make a big box set with EVERYTHING restored, but they never did it. So here are the box-sets, even including the gross and not-so-good "Adult Party Cartoon":
