A little over two years ago adult swim premiered. I can't really believe that it has been going on this long. Who would've thought something of this nature would've become so popular?
But that is not a good thing. No, it is not. When adult swim started, the lineup was great, probably the best there ever was. The only anime show on it was Cowboy Bebop, which is the only anime series that I have been able to get into and enjoy. Plus, it was only on Sundays, and then the replay was on Thursdays. This is one of the biggest things missing from adult swim right now, the Thursday replays. Everyone used to look forward to these, especially if you missed an episode of a show you knew wasn't going to air until weeks later. This was great.
Then they cancelled the Thursday replays and put adult swim action on Saturday nights. Well, losing Thursdays really sucked, but maybe we would get something cool out of the anime block, right? Nope. The only show that was on this block that didn't royally slurp donkey scrotum was Yu Yu Hakusho, and that got incredibly old after you've seen each episode roughly 39284972947427925 times. Pilot Candidate was also one of the worst things ever televised. But we still went with it, because Sundays were for the most part still excellent.
Then as time went by, we start seeing more anime show up, and then the rights to Futurama and Family Guy were bought. Adult swim changed the great old people bumpers to the incredibly gay safety card bumpers, and then to the pen-ultimately gay black and white cards, which do nothing but showcase exactly how crappy the intraweb is, and how especially retarded adult swim fans can be. Excellent work adult swim, we love seeing just how much of a fucking re-re everyone who watches adult swim and posts on your shitty message boards is.
Then adult swim started airing five nights a week. More than half of this time was devoted to anime, and really terrible anime at that. Kikaider and Reign were some of the worst shows ever to be put on TV. Then we have Fooly Cooly, or FLCL to the mad phat anime fanz. Futurama and Family Guy were decent additions, but these shows get very old if you watch them every night. Especially Futurama, since I couldn't really stand that show in the first place.
So in essence, we have lost Thursdays, then, if you really wanted to call it a gain, gained and then lost Saturdays, then just got nailed with an avalanche of shitty anime, which dwarfs the excellent WS cartoons and Home Movies in quantity, but surely not quality.
Now that the WS stuff is starting to come out on DVD, I may just end up buying all the DVDs I want and only ever watching adult swim if there are new episodes of these WS shows, because everything else is a total fag on adult swim anymore. This is the sad truth.
Here's an ideal schedule to fix adult swim, if just a bit. At 10, Home Movies. At 10:30, bring mother fucking Mission Hill back. At 11, The Brak Show. At 11:15, ATHF. At 11:30, Sealab 2021. At 11:45, We need a new short based on one of the specials. Saddle Rash perhaps? Then at 12 and 12:15, Space Ghost Coast to Coast because it is the greatest show ever, then Cowboy Bebop at 12:30 to keep the anime fans happy, and because it's the only anime show worth watching on adult swim. Mission Hill really needs to come back though. I mean, seriously. And it needs a new season as well. At least a DVD release for us fans. All in all, adult swim isn't nearly as enjoyable as it was when it first started. Sunday nights were finally something to look forward too. I'm sorry to say that the same cannot be said today.
